A player can split any pair that they want to and a dealer cannot. Yet this doesn't mean that it is advantageous to split every pair. Some pairs, when split, will win you money over the long run, and some will lose you money over the long run. It's our intention to choose the former.

However, when you split aces you now have a much higher percentage of hitting Blackjack because there are more 10 valued denominations in the deck than any other number.

A good example of a pair that you would never split is a pair of face cards. This is because you already have a total of 20 and that's usually good enough to win the hand outright.
